17th Sept 2005
All Referees prior to the 31st Dec 2005 must complete criminal Bureau checks and child protection training, this is something I have completed and unfortunately is necessary to protect children.
This applies to all Referees even if the referee officiates in open age football.
A Referee should inspect the playing surface and equipment prior to the game. I may be seen strolling around the pitch prior to a game this is NOT my warm up I am checking the pitch, for broken glass! dog dirt! obviously if the latter is found then the coach WILL be asked to remove it as he has the expertise required to remove it!!! I also check the nets particularly for metal hooks that hold the nets are now BANNED!. A number of instances have occurred including a referee who checked a net, He jumped up to re apply the net to a metal hook, he was wearing a wedding ring and he LOST part of a finger when it c got caught in the hook!!!
This Brings me nicely onto Jewellery at the comments of Wednesdays game I checked boots and players for jewellery for safety reasons.
A player from Tipton athletic was wearing a stud in his ear which I asked him to remove, This may have caused an injury.. I have a duty to protect that player and it WAS removed, a player should not wear anything which is considered dangerous to himself or another player..including any kind of jewellery, the only thing permitted is a wedding ring which MUST be taped....
I shall be dealing with other issues on a weekly basis, incidents that occur in your match and on TV including my view on WAYNE ROONEY sending off
